My apologies to everyone who left comments about my novel on my previous blog. I was unable to transfer them to this page, but they can be found in the Archives under August 2008. I appreciate your kind thoughts and words!
Nick,
I just finished Valley of Day-Glo. I really liked the futuristic interpretation of Native American culture, but then again I’m not a Native. I think some might be disheartened to think that any of our culture would be worshiped. Thanks for not making me read traditional sci-fi (sorry not a fan of the whole alien thing). I found myself wanting to know how Broadway Danny Rose would have changed the valley.
Any characters ever get inspiration from anyone in the old neighborhood? Where can I find your short stories? Any more readings at Geva? Third novel? I haven’t looked over your new website yet so maybe I’ll find the answers there.
Greg! Great to hear from you. I’m glad you liked my somewhat crazy novel. I’m just now putting the finishing touches on my third book, but I’ll have to find another publisher. Although there are some surreal touches in it, it’s set in 1985, and there are also elements of mystery, suspense, and noir weaving through it, nothing of science fiction to speak of, and ultimately I think I might have written myself out of my own market.
It’s hard to tell what traditional science fiction is these days. All of the media tie-in books are confusing the market and the readers, and those of us who enjoy real science fiction, a literature of ideas and original thought and stories, are finding our books being pushed off the shelf by Star Trek and Star Wars and Battlestar books. Alas, this is not traditional sci fi, and it’s getting harder to find the good stuff. If you’re at all interested, here are a few current sf authors I’ve read and enjoyed that you might try:
China Mieville, Robert J. Sawyer, Karl Schroeder, Robert Charles Wilson, Neal Stephenson (especially his earlier stuff). They’re all writing smart, interesting books. I’ll add a couple of fantasy authors too: Gregory MaGuire (Wicked, et al) and Steven Millhauser (an absolute genius).
Thanks for getting in touch. I haven’t seen you in a dog’s age, and it’s been quite a while since I’ve seen Mike. I hope you guys are doing well. I haven’t tapped into the old neighborhood for inspiration yet, but I’m sure I’ll get there eventually. Most of my short stories are out of print. I’d love to put together a collection someday. But you can find a few of them at http://www.fictionwise.com.
Take care and keep in touch!
